Top 10 Lists: 2002

For the rest of the 1995-present lists I will be just doing the top ten.

2002 was another strong year, so strong that my list of the best actually could pass for something from a legit critic.

10. Insomnia

Fantastic American remake of an equally fantastic Norwegian thriller with a great trio of performances from Al Pacino, Hilary Swank and Robin Williams.

9. The Transporter

One of the more energetic, fun action movies of the year.  The film that made Jason Statham into an action star.  Good stuff.

8. Super Troopers

The Broken Lizard comedy troupe makes their film debut with this wild, raunchy slobs vs. snobs comedy.  Tons of laughs, great lines and outrageous humor.  Pity they never reached this level again.

7. Minority Report

It my not be classic Spielberg along the lines of his 80's output but this sci-fi thriller is still a blast.  Great f/x, a few really nice action beats and considering the running time (I can't remember the last time a Spielberg film came in under two hours), a blistering pace.

6. Gangs of New York

Another year, another great Martin Scorsese film.  Gotta love the frankly scary as hell Daniel Day Lewis performance.

5. Frailty

I really dig this nifty little thriller with Bill Paxton as a deranged father.  He also does the directing and does fine with that too.  This is a nice little hidden gem of horror cinema.

4. The Bourne Identity

A first class thriller with a great car chases and good work from the cast.

3. Catch Me if You Can

I love this enjoyable comedy/drama with fun performances from Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Walken.  2002 was a really, really good year for Spielberg.

2. Dog Soldiers

The best werewolf movie since An American Werewolf in London.  Great f/x, great pace, just a hell of a fun movie.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The middle installment of Peter Jackson's first Middle Earth exploration is even better than the first with pretty much everything firing on all cylinders.

2002 was a fantastic year for film.  Just a ton of great films, large and small.

  1. Re: Insomnia, that hotel could have made a killing if they stocked sleep masks, but it would have derailed most of the plot.
